Are you looking for an amazing trekking adventure that's off the beaten trail? Yes, you can truly connect with nature away from the crowds; every trekker prefers the same, and you are not exceptional. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is the wonderful option for anyone who loves hiking on such peaceful trails.

Where is the Manaslu Circuit Trek located?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is located in the Gorkha district. It spans from Ganesh Himal in the east and the Annapurna region in the west.

Why is trekking the Manaslu circuit restricted for foreign nationals?

Many other trekking regions in Nepal are declared restricted areas, not only the Manaslu region. The areas extending to the Tibetan border have remained closed to foreign nationals for a long time. Later, the Government of Nepal gradually opened those restricted areas to group trekkers, with a minimum of two trekkers in a group. The Manaslu Circuit Trek was opened only to group trekkers in 1992.

In contrast to the requirement of two trekkers, the Government of Nepal has now eased permit regulations for solo trekkers all over the restricted areas.

Buddhists also consider the Manaslu region a Pure Land or Beyul (pronounced Behyul in Tibetan), where spiritual practitioners believe they can experience something beyond worldly visions.

A Captivating Trek to Manaslu: A Unforgettable Adventure.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek encompasses one of the most beautiful and least-visited areas of Nepal. The journey takes you around the world's eighth-highest mountain through the Budi Gandaki River Valley.

The trek covers approximately 200 kilometers. It starts from Machha Khola and ends at Besisahar. The duration of a trek is from 12 to 17 days in the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Side Trips and Monasteries

There are many great side trips you won't want to miss. We have included them right into our Manaslu Circuit Trek Itinerary.

You will explore the Serang Monastery, nestled in the lap of the Siringi Himal. It is actually the most popular monastery among the Nyingma Buddhist communities. There are over 200 monks and nuns who practice Buddhism. While you are there, you'll get the chance to join in the daily ritual ceremonies and engage in self-meditation – an experience you will not find anywhere else.

You will have time for a side trip to Pungen Gompa from Shayala. It will give you a simply breathtaking view of the Mount Manaslu. Similarly, you'll hike up to the famous Manaslu Base Camp through the Birendra Lake.

The Manaslu Base Camp is not only a camp for the Manaslu Expedition, but also a place to see the beauty of the Himalayas. It will help you get acclimatized for the final push over the Larke La Pass.

Reaching Larkya-La Pass

Lately, this trek has become so popular for its diverse landscapes. You will see everything from the lush tropical forests to the arid Trans-Himalayan high pastures. A 17-day trek on the Manaslu Circuit is going to be a really unique and unforgettable experience in Nepal. You will reach the highest point of the trek, the Larkya-La Pass. It is sure to be an unforgettable experience you will cherish forever.

Now that you know why trekking to Manaslu should be your next adventure, let's explore which trek variation is right for you.

Manaslu Circuit Trek: Quick facts

  • Explore biodiversity - a trek is the best way to walk through the subtropical to the arid high Himalayan alpine meadows within the Manaslu Conservation Area.
  • Friendly people, a rich culture, and the region comprising Nepalese and Tibetan ethnic groups.
  • Larkya-La is the highest point on the trek, and it feels more adventurous, admirable, and like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • The Manaslu Circuit Trek allows spectacular scenery and breathtaking views of the high mountains, including Mount Manaslu and other sister peaks.
  • A side trip to Pungen Gompa, Manaslu Base Camp, or Birendra Lake from Sama Gaon - discover hidden treasures and help you acclimatize properly.
  • Trekking around Mount Manaslu (the world's 8th-highest mountain) and its Base Camp offers views of the high Himalayas.

Essential Trek Features That Make It Special

The Manaslu Circuit offers truly unique experiences. These features make it apart from other Himalayan adventures, including the Everest Base Camp Trek and the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Larkya La Pass (5,106m)

The dramatic Larkya La Pass stands as the highest point of the circuit at 5,06m. At the same time, you will pass through the different climatic zones and diverse landscapes. You need to start early, around 3-4 AM, to reach Larkya La.

It will be a demanding walk along the glacial trail so that you will need headlamps and layered warm clothing. You will require trekking poles and careful navigation while you ascend from Dharmashala (~4460m) or descend to Bhimthang from the Pass.

You will enjoy 360-degree panoramas of Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and surrounding peaks. The timing makes a matter for every high-pass trek in Nepal. It is best to cross Larkya la Pass in stable weather.

Altitude sickness is always a concern at such a high-altitude pass. So don't try to attempt rapid elevation gain. You make sure acclimatization days are properly plan into your itinerary.

Consult with our local specialist who plan perfect Manaslu trek itinerary that fits every adventurer.

Remote Tibetan Villages

As a trekker, you will encounter varied villages along your route. The villages in the Upper Valley are totally different than those in the Lower Valley.

The Tibetan-influenced villages remain massively off the beaten path. You can experience authentic Buddhist culture in the remote villages like Chhekapar, Lamagaon, Samagaon, and Samdo.

You will see the dense stone houses that make very narrow alleys between the houses. The colorful prayer flags are fluttering on the roof. Moreover, you will have a good smell of incense and butter lamps from the monasteries. These monasteries will welcome you. You will have a chance to participate in the ceremony and share the delicious meals with the monks.

Due to the proximity of the Tibetan border, you will find similarities in every aspect of life, culture, and tradition.

Wildlife in Manaslu Conservation Area

The location of the Manaslu Conservation Area is the Gorkha district of Nepal. It covers 1,663 sq. kilometers and protects the biodiversity from 600 meters to 5000+ meters.

It is a great natural canvas to experience while on a trek to Manaslu. You will feel an elevation shift every 250 meters due to the diverse landscapes from subtropical to alpine terrain.

The Manaslu Conservation Area is rich in exotic flora and fauna. You can observe more than 30 types of mammals, 200+ birds, 3 reptiles, and 11 types of plants. That means, you will encounter from the Snow leopard to the Red panda, the Golden eagle to the Himalayan monal, and Rhododendron to Blue puppies.

The path itself passes through a lush Valley to the alpine terrain that features glacial lakes and suspension bridges over the streams.

Manaslu Circuit Trek for Every Adventure Level

The Manaslu trek offers something for every adventurer, whether you prefer a leisurely around Manaslu trek or a classic experience.

Classic 14-Day Manaslu Circuit

The Manaslu Circuit Trek generally starts in Machha Khola. The caravan route of this trek is Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo. You then cross the Larkya La Pass and descend to Bimthang and Dharapani.

The duration of this trek usually takes 12 to 17 days or longer. You can expect to walk 6 to 8 hours daily. It is kind of a good mix of challenge and accessibility. The terrain varies from suspension bridges to the rocky morraines, including lush forests and high altitude areas above 5000 meters.

Along the route, teahouses provide basic accommodations. Rooms typically have two single beds and thin mattresses. Shared toilets are common, and dining areas are usually heated. Meals consist of local dishes like dal bhat and noodles, showcasing authentic mountain hospitality.

Extended 18-Day Trek with Tsum Valley

You can extend your trek by 4-5 extra days to explore the sacred Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek. The area is known as Boi-hyul (Behyul) - a significant Buddhist site and hidden sanctuary near the Tibet border.

You will go through some of the most remote and medieval villages. The villages remain with the traditional stone-roofed houses. The ancient monasteries and the prayer flags redefine the Tsum Valley.

So it is worth it because you will immerse yourself in authentic mountain life and Tibetan Buddhism.

The Tsum Valley is beyond the standard Manaslu Circuit trek route. Many trekkers choose a combined Manaslu trek via Tsum Valley, so you will require an additional Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit.

Short 12-Day Express Circuit

The short Manaslu Circuit Trek is a shorter version of the itinerary, designed for time-conscious trekkers. The experience of this variation is the same as the classic route. However, the difference is that crafting an itinerary reduces the number of acclimatization days.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is demanding itself. So, a short 12-day itinerary will also be more difficult. You need to maintain the trekking pace throughout. The route is suitable for you if you have good physical fitness and experience with high-altitude trekking. Additionally, it will be helpful if you have completed various treks with similar elevations.

Pick the Right Manaslu Trek for Your Level of Experience

The right trek variation is going to make all the difference in your mountain experience - and help you actually make it through this challenging Himalayan adventure. This trek is moderate to strenuous, so it's super important to pick an itinerary that fits your fitness level.

For First-Timers on the Trail

If you're a novice trekker, you might want to consider the 17-day Manaslu Circuit, with a few extra days built in to help you acclimatize. You might make a circuit via Pugen Gompa instead of going to Samagaon directly from Shyala. And you will take a rest day in Samagaon (~3530m). Don't skip it - it's a crucial acclimatization point. It is also a great chance to take in some of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. You can enjoy a short hike to Manaslu Base Camp. Alternatively, take easy day hikes around Birendra Lake.

You'll need to be pretty fit. Be prepared for this, we're talking 6 to 8 hours of hiking a day. So make sure you have some previous multi-day hiking experience at moderate altitudes. It is most important before taking on the Manaslu Circuit. Don't hesitate to ask for help along the way. Consider hiring a trekking guide and porter. They can help to keep you on track and safe, especially in the remote parts of the route.

For Experienced Hikers

The standard 14-day itinerary is suitable for seasoned hikers. It includes extra days for acclimatization in picturesque villages like Samagaon and Samdogaon. You can do a day trip to Manaslu Base Camp at 4800 meters from Samagaon. It is a pretty special side trip with snow-capped peaks and glaciers that'll take your breath away.

A side trip to the Tibet border from Samdo is another epic experience that will blow your mind. These places are not only the scenic places to see the breathtaking mountain view, but also to experience the alpine meadows and high altitude terrain.

On the other hand, you will be fully acclimated to push the challenging Larke-La Pass.

For Expert Mountaineers

You'll find that the 12-day express circuit or extended routes, with all the challenging side trips, are suitable for the expert mountaineer. Crossing the Larkya La Pass is the hardest part of the entire trek.

If you are an experienced climber, you will appreciate the technical demands. Moreover, you will start pre-dawn, dealing with snow and ice and a long, tiring descent to Bhimthang.

The experience you will gain from this trek is similar to the Everest Base Camp Trek in the terms of altitude exposure. But you will get an extra reward for crossing the high Pass. Additionally, you can combine it with Larkya Peak climbing.

For Cultural Enthusiasts

The 18-day extended trek with Tsum Valley offers the deepest cultural immersion available on any circuit trek in a remote location in Nepal. The trek offers cultural immersion through Tibetan-influenced villages and monasteries, similar to the standalone Tsum Valley Trek. Two different local communities dominate the region. One is the Gurung, and another is the Tsumpa-Pa (Nupri people).

These two communities are influenced by the Tibetan Buddhism that features throughout the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The trek passes through villages with traditional stone houses, mani walls, and prayer wheels.

The trekkers who are keenly interested in exploring the hidden culture, this trek is for you. You need only add some extra time to enjoy meaningful interaction with locals and learning about ancient spiritual practices in this magical Nepal.

How to Prepare for Your Manaslu Circuit Trek

Preparation is the most important task when you are trekking in the Himalayas. You will fully enjoy this unforgettable journey if you prepare properly. We have put together the 15 most important tips for your Manaslu Circuit Trek. Among them, here are a few most essential tips for this trek, covering physical preparation, permits, and logistics.

Physical Training Requirements

You need to follow a 6-month training program that really helps you build your endurance. The program includes a long day hike with significant elevation gain. You can focus on leg strength and cardio fitness. Expect to trek 6 to 7 hours daily, so make sure to practice hiking with carrying a pack regularly.

Your trek will reach a maximum altitude of 5106m. The acclimatization days are the most crucial for your safety. For this purpose, we recommend that you allow buffer days in your itinerary. Some high-altitude training or previous trekking experience will help with your preparation. Gradual ascent and proper acclimatization help you mitigate the altitude sickness.

The winter trekking is always strenuous due to heavy snowfall, so choose your trekking season wisely.

Permit and Guide Arrangements

The permit system within the restricted areas of Nepal is not negotiable. It also applies to the Manaslu region. You will need three different permits when you trek to Manaslu.

The Permits are:
  1. Restricted Area Permit for the Manaslu region
  2. Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Traveling through the protected area.
  3. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required to exist at Dharapani, which belongs to the Annapurna conservation area.

How to obtain the Manaslu trekking permit?

You may not obtain these permits directly. The trekking agency, like Himalayan Exploration Treks, applies for the permits on your behalf. However, a licensed guide is compulsory to obtain those trekking permits. These permits will be checked at various checkpoints along the trails.

The Manaslu region is a restricted area that prohibits solo trekking without a guide; as of March 2026, it no longer requires a minimum group size. However, you can now trek solo, with a licensed guide from a registered agency accompanying you.

Best Time and Season Planning

The best time of year to visit the Manaslu Circuit Trek is during the autumn season. The autumn season runs from September to November. Due to the effect of global warming, the best time to trek Manaslu is specifically from mid-October to mid-December. The rainy season is over during the period. You will find the skies are clear, and the trail conditions are good and stable.

Alternatively, you can also trek in the spring, from March to May. It is also the best time to trek in Nepal. You can expect the snow at the Pass, but it is accessible. You will see the flowers bloom and enjoy the warmer temperatures during this period.

Note that the top trekking seasons in Nepal are autumn and spring. The winter and the rainy season are not recommended for this trek. There is heavy snowfall in the winter season. It may completely block Larkya La Pass. On the other hand, the monsoon season brings heavy rainfall. It may cause an increase in the risk of landslides, slippery conditions, and blockage of the trail section.

The travel insurance is mandatory, which includes coverage for emergency helicopter evacuation regardless of when you choose to trek.

Budget and Daily Costs

We are here to break down the trekking costs. The following services are the most essential and add to the cost of your Manaslu Circuit trek.

  • An English-speaking guide's fee ranges from US$25 to US$35 per day, depending on their experience, knowledge, and proficiency. A specific language-speaking guide price may vary by group size.
  • A porter's costs range from $18 to $20 per day.
  • The Manaslu trekking permit costs $175-$215 during peak season. (The cost includes the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, conservation area permit fees, and municipal charges).
  • Meals and basic teahouse range from $30 to $40 per day.
  • Tipping, plan a budget of generally 10-15% of the total cost.
  • Transportation from Kathmandu to Machha Khola ranges from $180 to $200 for a private Jeep. Likewise, the cost from Dharapani to Kathmandu ranges from $235 to $250, respectively. If you are seeking the cheapest option, you may choose the local bus service, which is more than 200% lesser than a private jeep. It totally depends on your budget and comfort preference.
  • Trekking gear, such as a sleeping bag, a down jacket, and other essentials, as well as international flight, travel insurance, and a visa fee, may add to your trek cost.

At Himalayan Exploration Treks, you will get an all-inclusive Manaslu Circuit trek package at $1350 to ensure a hassle-free experience.
