The Upper Dolpo Trek is a remote, high-altitude trek in western Nepal. Opened to tourism only in 1989. The restricted zone is famous for its challenging terrain, stunning landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage. The trail you will take you through lush forests, hidden valleys, and high passes above 5000 meters. The journey lasts 27 days on foot from Kathmandu to Kathmandu.

The Upper Dolpo region is kind of like Tibet—same geography, same cultural vibe. The real magic of this place has a profound influence on Bon culture and Tibetan Buddhism. Yet it remains uncharted territory for many and preserves its natural beauty. These are the valid reasons it's a perfect destination for anyone who truly values serenity.

The Upper Dolpo trekking route takes you through a truly breathtaking glacial valley, deep gorges, and high mountain passes. It's a real treat for anyone who loves adventures. You'll visit Ringmo village, Thansung Tsholing Bon Gompa, and Shey Phoksundo Lake.

Likewise, you will take a rugged route along the Phoksundo River Valley before crossing the Nanda-La (Kang-La pass, 5360 meters). It is the highest pass on the Upper Dolpo Circuit. After this, explore the revered Shey Gompa, one of the most ancient monasteries in the region.

Nearby stands the sacred Crystal Mountain, a destination for local pilgrims whose ritual circuit around the mountain is said to bring spiritual purification.

If you are a nature or wildlife enthusiast, this region is a paradise. You're likely to spot the wildlife along the way, including snow leopards, blue sheep, yaks, and more.

Of course, the scenery is as awe-inspiring as the wildlife. But the real magic happens when you reach the hidden villages of Saldang and Yangtser Gompa, and the real secret of Upper Dolpo remains untold. So the journey feels like a personal retreat in the heart of the Himalayas.

Upper Dolpo Trek Overview

We're offering a 27-day journey that'll take you deep into the Upper Dolpo trek in Nepal. An area that fewer than a handful of travelers reach each year. Venturing to the far western region of Nepal is the ultimate adventure for those seeking to get off the beaten path. Your journey will take you from lush forest to the stunning mountain scenery as you make your way to the secret of Upper Dolpo that you won't find in Guidebooks.

It is a beautiful area home to the famous Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest national park in Nepal, and to the rare snow leopard. While sightings are rare, trekkers often spot blue sheep on open hillsides and may come across signs of snow leopards (such as tracks or scat) near remote valleys. Along with that, valuable herbs, such as Yarcha Gumba (Cordyceps sinensis), Panchkula (Dactylorhiza hatagirea), and many others, are available on the slopes of giant green fields.

The Upper Dolpo Trek is physically demanding and requires mental toughness and endurance. However, those who are determined and work hard to accomplish this trek will gain more than they give. This pure trekking adventure allows you to experience the beauty of nature and interact with the local people and their culture.

Explore why trekking to Upper Dolpo is considered one of the best treks in the Himalayas. We invite you to embark on this journey with us, during which we will attend to your needs with the utmost care and attention.

Upper Dolpo Trek Route

The Upper Dolpo trek is not for everyone, and there is no question about it. It requires good physical fitness and prior trekking experience. You will walk for extended periods at high altitudes. Additionally, you must be prepared for unpredictable weather conditions. If you are experienced trekkers, this trek is for you!

Starting from Juphal airstrip, this fantastic trek offers incredible scenery. You will see the most beautiful and remotest villages, lush forests, and the stunning Shey Phoksundo Lake. Notably, this Lake is the deepest in the world at 3,600 meters.

The views are worth all the hard work. The maximum altitude you can get to is Kang-La Pass. On the day you cross this Pass at 5,350 meters, expect a steep climb, thin air, a big view from the top, and a long descent to Shey Gompa—colorful prayer flags and monasteries everywhere.

The Upper Dolpo is a completely camping trek. So you will get an authentic wilderness experience. You won't find it on many other treks in Nepal. The beautiful landscape, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage of the Dolpo region make every day a worthwhile experience. It is a challenging trek, but one that you will never forget.

Possible Expanded Routes

There are many possible extensions in the Dolpo region. All accessible by a single hike, lasting anywhere from 7 days to 27 days or even more. .
  • The Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek: If you extend another 5 to 6 days on your Upper Dolpo trek itinerary, you can make it possible. Keep in mind that you will need at least 12-day restricted area permits as well as an Annapurna Conservation Area permit.
  • The Dolpo to Jumla via Dho Tarap: If you want to explore the Bon heritage, then you can add another 6 to 7 days to your Lower Dolpo Trek itinerary. You will have three major high passes, alpine meadows, lakes, and Bon monasteries in a single excursion.
  • The Great Himalayan Trail Traverse (Upper Dolpo to Rara Lake): If you want to trek in a more remote area, then you will need 10 to 12 days more on your Upper Dolpo Trek itinerary. You will journey through the trans-Himalayan region that connects to the Rara Lake. You will pay the Rara National Park entry fee and the RAP for Dolpo.
  • Lower Dolpo Trek: If you have a time constraint of less than two weeks, you will still have a chance to explore the Dolpo region. You will apply for the Shey Phoksundo National Park permit and RAP for Lower Dolpo.

Take some time to get familiar with our Upper Dolpo trek guide; it should give you a good idea of what your trip will be like. This trek is the perfect choice for those seeking natural beauty and cultural authenticity.

How to Get There and Back

The most accessible way to begin your Upper Dolpo Adventure is to take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Then you fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal. The flight offers beautiful aerial views of the Himalayas.

Alternatively, you can take a direct bus from Kathmandu to Dolpo, which takes 27 to 34 hours. It is not often accessible. You will see some of the most beautiful landscapes. But it's a long and exhausting journey.

Permit & Regulation

The Dolpo region has two distinct parts. Both parts are the restricted areas that require permits.

  • For the Upper Dolpo Permit: $500 per person for the first 10 days, plus $50 per day for each additional day.
  • For the Lower Dolpo Permit: $20 per person per week, plus $5 per day thereafter.
  • Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Fee: 3000 NPR per entry.

Here's how the permit process works:

  • Upon your arrival in Nepal, you will require a valid visa.
  • Your trekking agency will apply with the necessary documents to the Department of Immigration to obtain the permits.
  • The authorities will verify all and issue them.

Pro Tips:

  • You will need a licensed guide, but solo trekking is allowed.
  • The government strictly enforces these rules in restricted areas of Nepal.

Best Season

The best time to visit Upper Dolpo is still spring (mid-March to May) and autumn (September to mid-November). When you come in these seasons, the weather will be clear, with the blue skies. But there's very little chance of snow, which makes it an excellent time for trekking.

The Dolpo region is located in a rain shadow, so unlike in other areas of Nepal, the summer or monsoon months are also suitable for trekking.

Avoid winter, from December to February, when it is freezing and snow blocks the high mountain passes, making them impassable.

You can have a safe and enjoyable experience in this beautiful, remote region by choosing the right time for your trek.

Upper Dolpo Trek: Difficulty, Preparation & Packing List

Trekking in Upper Dolpo is a high-altitude adventure that will really test your physical and mental limits. You will need to walk 5 to 9 hours a day, which involves many high passes. You'll not only face steep ascents and descents but also spend many days above 4,000 meters. Prior trekking experience, good fitness, and a positive mindset will help you overcome its difficulties.

Difficulty and Physical Preparation

This trek is rated moderate to strenuous because of its demanding terrain, long walking days, and high elevation. To get ready for it, you should:

  • Do Cardiovascular Training: Try doing some aerobic exercise, like running on a treadmill, swimming laps, or cycling, a few times a week for at least 3 months before you head out.
  • Build Your Strength: Push-ups, pull-ups, bench presses, squats, and lunges are the most effective for improving mental and physical stamina and endurance.
  • Practice Multi-Day Hikes: Hiking with a backpack for several days in a row on trails with elevation gain to simulate real trekking conditions and improve stamina.

Acclimatization and Altitude Awareness

Acclimatization is the most important for staying healthy during this trek. At high altitudes, there is a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). So your itinerary includes rest days, giving your body time to adjust.

To minimize altitude problems:

  • Ascend Gradually: Follow the altitude rule: climb high and sleep low. Plan 5-700 meters of climbing per day above 2,500 meters.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluid (water) to prevent dehydration and help your body adapt.
  • Listen to Your Body: It enables you to understand your condition. Tell your guide immediately if you are feeling sick. Take a rest or descend to a lower elevation if necessary.

If you trek with Himalayan Exploration Treks, you'll have minimal risk of AMS. Our guides are well-trained to handle these situations. We will provide a GAMOW bag —a portable hyperbaric chamber resembling a large sleeping bag.

Pro Tips: Suppose a trekker shows symptoms of AMS at a high camp. In that case, the guide will use the GAMOW bag to simulate a lower altitude and, if needed, can call for emergency evacuation via satellite phone.

Trekking Conditions and Facilities

Upper Dolpo is the kind of place you go to for a real adventure - remote, rugged, and with practically nothing in the way of luxury, so you'll need to be prepared for the simple things in life and a bit of a challenge.
  • Camping: You'll be sleeping either in a tent or a basic teahouse, so no luxury resort for you. It's the real deal.
  • Weather: In a rain shadow, so you'd expect a pretty sunny and dry place, but be prepared for it to go from pleasant to pretty awful in a heartbeat - temperature swings can be wild.
  • Communication: In the villages like Dunai, Ringmo, Dho Tarap, and Saldang, you'll get some mobile signal, but out of these places, you'll depend on your guide and your teammates.
If you make a proper plan with the right mindset. The Upper Dolpo trek is entirely doable.

Packing List

You will need to pack smart to have all the necessary gear. Here is a packing list to help you:

  • Hiking boots: Sturdy, waterproof, with good grip and ankle support.
  • Trekking poles: Lightweight, adjustable for steep up and down.
  • Sleeping bag: A high-quality, 4-season sleeping bag rated for -20°C.
  • Backpack: Comfortable, durable, and equipped with a rain cover and multiple compartments with 45 to 55 liters.
  • Clothing: Wear layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing, including base layers, insulating layers, waterproof jackets, and pants.
  • First aid kit: A basic kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and personal medication.
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder: Insulated, BPA-free.
  • Sunglasses and suncream: Always wear UV-protective sunglasses and apply high-SPF suncream to ensure maximum sun protection.

By following these helpful guidelines and packing thoughtfully, you'll be set up for an incredible adventure on the Upper Dolpo Trek!

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is essential when trekking to Nepal—it's a must-have that'll give you much-needed peace of mind as you head into one of the wildest & most beautiful regions out there.

When you're purchasing a policy, make sure you get one that covers the essentials, like:

  • Emergency evacuations by helicopter.

  • Repatriation if things get really serious.

With the right coverage, you can enjoy the stunning scenery and rich culture of Upper Dolpo without worrying about risks.

The 18-day Lower and Upper Dolpo trek was individually tailored to our needs by Kumar Lama. Kumar had put together a great team of guides, cooks, and mule guides. This team fulfilled all of our wishes at all times during the entire tent trek. Nursang, our guide, is very attentive and careful along the entire route. Kumar is very reliable. He looked after us very well in the preparation and execution of our trek, during our stay in Kathmandu, and even until the farewell at the airport. A highly recommended local company for individually planning a trekking tour. The trip was a great experience.
