Trekking Alone? Nepal’s New Policy Makes it Possible for All

Nepal has some restricted areas in the Himalayas that border Tibet. It stretches from the East to the West, covering 13 districts in total. Trekking in these designated areas requires a trekking permit. A group of two or more trekkers must apply for the permit. The Government of Nepal has made significant changes to the previously strict rules for solo trekkers in the restricted areas of Nepal. 

The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal has been raising these concerns for decades, affecting many trekkers and the promotion of tourism. Addressing this situation, the department has finally opened the door for solo trekkers to hit the trails on their own.

The decision was made at the departmental level by the Department of Immigration on Sunday, 22nd March 2026. From now on, the Department of Immigration will shift to this strict policy. It will allow foreign trekkers to trek solo in Nepal’s designated restricted areas. But the rest of the policy remains unchanged. 

Streamlined Trekking Permits: Explore Nepal’s Hidden Gems

The DOI has introduced an online permit application system. The foreign nationals can now apply for their permits from their home country. However, the trekkers can use a visa application number (submission ID) instead of previously requiring a valid visa number. Consequently, this change aims to make obtaining permits faster, more convenient, and more user-friendly.

Unleashing Adventure: New Rules for Independent Trekkers in Nepal  

In an important update on policy, the department has introduced permits for individual (solo) trekkers in restricted areas. These new regulations apply to all restricted areas across Nepal. The regions include Kanchenjunga Base Camp in Taplejung, the Manaslu Tsum Valley areas in Gorkha, the Nar Phu valleys in Manang, Upper Mustang in Mustang, Upper and Lower Dolpa in Dolpa, and Limi Valley in Humla, among others. However, the department has established strict conditions for foreign solo trekkers, according to Spokesperson Tikaram Dhakal.

The conditions are:

• Required Trekking Agency: A registered trekking company submits an application for the permit.
• Mandatory Guide: The hikers (solo or group) must trek with a licensed trekking guide.
• Emergency Rescue Responsibility: The respective agency must take full responsibility for emergency rescues.
• Legal Compliance: All trekking arrangements must comply strictly with existing laws and regulations.
• Group Size Limits: 1 guide:7 trekkers in a group to ensure effective safety monitoring. If more than 7 people, then split the group and assign another guide.

The Immigration Department claims the revised policy expects a positive impact on tourism, creates more job opportunities, improves safety for trekkers, and facilitates the overall management of trekking activities in Nepal.
